Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates and the richest city in the world, is currently experiencing a period of massive growth. With expectations that population figures will increase three fold by 2030, the Abu Dhabi government is implementing and encouraging major investment programmes.

Whilst global markets are experiencing economic turmoil, Abu Dhabi has the resources to maintain expenditure in-line with Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 - the emirate's long term strategic infrastructure development initiative.

  • Investment in water projects jumps 20%
  • The United Arab Emirates invested 20% more in 2008 than in 2007 on water projects. (US$11.62 billion in 2007 and US$14 billion in 2008)
  • Of the US$14 billion invested in 2008, US$7 billion was earmarked for processing waste water whilst just over US$5 billion was allocated for water generation and transportation projects
  • Demand for water in Abu Dhabi is expected to grow by 43% over the next five years. Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA) is spending US$1.3 billion on expanding its five desalination plants.
  • Dubai has allocated US$27 billion to be spent on power and water projects by the end of the decade
